How do we define a crime?

May 27, 2009

From Pickerrick

It seems to me that we need an objective definition of crime. Here is the problem and it’s bigger than marijuana even. If a government can say that a plant that grows naturally out of the ground is illegal, then the government can make anything illegal – anything at all! It seems to me that any definition of crime would include a victim and where there is no victim, there is no crime.

And the argument that smoking marijuana supports drug violence is circular since if marijuana were not illegal, there would be no illegal drug violence associated with it ~~how do we wake up the programmed ones???

From Inspirations from Binah:

The answer to your question lies is understanding and education. Regardless of which side of the issue you stand on, you can only create a bridge between them when you understand why one would choose the other. There is no absolute right or wrong stance, but there is free will. Yet many who exercise their free will forget the next, and most important piece – personal responsibility.

The overall goals are the same, give people the most amount of freedom while keeping the public safe. Once you realize that you are looking at the same problem, you can work together to redraft laws so that they cover the need for personal responsibility without encroaching unnecessarily on free will. Show that you believe each person should take responsibility for his/her actions and you will find people willing to listen to your views of the issue.

From the inside out changes can be made. They require you to open your mind and find the reason why the laws exist as they are. Each person that voted for the law, felt that there was a need. Educate them on why the need has changed; be a part of the system you want to create. When you speak with knowledge, respect and understanding, all will listen.
